Generation of computer

Generation of Computer

First Generation of Computer (1940-1956)

  • The first computers used vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums.
  • Punch card & Paper tape was secondary storage.
  • limited internal storage capacity & slow input/output operations.
  • It is not portable.
  • Consume lot of electricity.
  • The UNIVAC and ENIAC computers are examples of  Ist generation computing device.
  • Some Computer of this generation were: ENIAC, EDVAC, UNIVAC, IBM-701, IBM-650

Second Generation of Computer(1956-1963)

  • The Second Generation computer replacement of vacuum tubes by transistors
  • Tapes and magnetic disk was used for Secondary Storage.
  • High-level procedural languages  COBOL & FORTRAN.
  • Smaller, Faster, cheaper and less heavy on electricity use than first generation Computer.
  • Magnetic core was use for primary storage.
  • Some Computer  of this generation: IBM1620, IBM7094, CDC1604, CDC3600, UNIVAC1108.

Third Generation (1964-1971)

  • The Third Generation of computer used Integrated Circuits(ICs) in place of transistors.
  • IC was invented by Jack Kilby.
  • A Single IC has many transistors, resistors, and capacitors.
  • Magnetic-disk was used for secondary storage.
  • Smaller than Second generation.
  •  In this Generation Operating system wad developed.
  • Development of mini Computer
  •  Some Computer of this gen.: IBM-360 Series, Honeywell-6000 series, PDP(Personal Data Processor), IBM-370/168, TDC-316

Forth Generation (1972-2010)

  • Used Microprocessors.
  • Semi-Conductor were used for Primary Storage.
  • Development of microcomputer or PC.
  • Large Scale integrated Circuits & very large scale integrated was used in this generation.
  • High level languages like C, C++ & DBMS used in the generation.
  • The forth generations Computer are  DEC10, STAR 1000, PDP 11, CRAY-1 CRAY-X-MP(Super Computer.

Fifth Generation (Present and Beyond)

  • 5th gen. Computer devices, based on artificial intelligence.
  • Ultra Large Scale Integration(ULSI) used in this Generation.
  •  Ram & Rom is used for primary Storage.
  • HDD & SSD is used for Secondary Storage.
  • All higher level programming languages like C, C++, JAVA, PYTHON, .NET are used in this Generation.
  • The Fifth Generations Computer are Desktop, Laptop, NoteBook, UltraBook, ChromeBook.
