Motherboard and its Functions

Function of motherboard components and various processors.

Motherboard: Motherboard is also known as the printed circuit board. A motherboard is the main circuit board inside a computer that connect the different parts of a computer together. It is considered to be the most important part of a computer system.

Some of the important equipment attached to the motherboard includes: CPU(Central processing unit), RAM(Random access memory), Hard Disk, I/O device like keyboard, mouse, monitor, USB devices etc.

Parts of a motherboard and their function:

CPU Socket: The brain of computer that responsible for fetching, decoding and executing program instructions as well as performing mathematical and logical calculations.

BIOS(Basic Input Output System): BIOS is the program that used to start the computer system after it is powered on. When the BIOS is turned on the computer, it detects and configure the Ram, Processer, Keyboard, Hard Disk etc.

It is stored in EEPROM memory which recognizes all the hardware of the computer. It is mainly used to boot the operating system when the computer is turned on.

BIOS is a non-volatile memory which is chip installed in the motherboard Which can not easily delete because this is EEPROM type memory.

RAM (Random access memory) : It is a part of the computer memory system made up of a semiconductor. it is computer short-term memory. it is read/write memory. ram is volatile memory that temporary store the data when it is erased when you restart or shut down your computer.

CMOS Battery: Stand for - Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor. it is responsible for keeping all the information intact when the entire system is shit down.

Cache memory: It is a small block of high speed memory that acts as a buffer between RAM and the CPU. It holds frequently requested data and instructions so that they are immediately available to the processor on demand.

PCI stand for Peripheral Component Interconnect bus is an input/output pathway from the CPU to peripheral devices. These are the slots that allow inserting expansion cards such as graphics card, sound card, LAN card and other several functions computer parts.

North Bridge Chipset: North bridge or host bridge is a microchip which is directly connected to the CPU. It's work to manage to Ram, hard disk and PCI devices.

South Bridge Chipset: It is also called IC chip which is connected to the north side. It work to control the all Input/output functions.

IDE Connector: Stand for Integrated Drive Electronics. It is responsible for controlling the hard disk and optical disc device eg. CD, DVD in the computer.
